What to Expect After Dry Needling
Dry needling is a powerful tool for releasing muscle tension and reducing pain — but knowing what to expect afterwards helps you get the most out of your treatment.
Normal Sensations
After dry needling it’s completely normal to experience:
- Muscle soreness in the treated area — similar to the feeling after a hard workout
- Minor bruising at the needle site in some cases
- Temporary fatigue in the muscle — this is a sign it’s responding
These sensations are part of the healing process and typically resolve within 24–48 hours.
Ice the Area
Apply ice to the treated area for 10–15 minutes after your session. This helps reduce local inflammation and ease soreness. A cold pack wrapped in a cloth works well — avoid direct ice on skin.
Rest and Activity
- Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours and until most of the soreness has settled
- Light walking and gentle movement is fine
- Listen to your body — if it’s sore, ease off
Area-Specific Notes
Calves — The calves can take longer to settle than other areas. Don’t be alarmed if soreness persists for 2–3 days. Continue icing and avoid running until fully settled.
Neck & Headaches — If you’re being treated for neck tension or headaches, dry needling can temporarily bring on your symptoms in the short term. This is a normal response and usually settles within 24 hours.
Recommended Treatment Frequency
For best results, Merryn recommends leaving at least one week between dry needling sessions. This gives your body time to respond and integrate the treatment fully.
